Very Credible Productivity Application

We've been internally reviewing iOS Productivity applications since the store first opened; whenever we see another "Sticky Note" application we are usually pretty skeptical; fortunately for the authors of Bords, this application is no ordinary sticky note offering. We really like Penultimate and Corkulous - but both of those applications have some limitations as well. Bords does a nice job of providing some of the functionality we would like to see in a comprehensive wipe board/sticky note system; From its full search features to the large canvass that can be customized with 5 different background styles and the recently added iOS printing support, Bords proves to be a VERY SOLID entry for Soliant Consulting (looks like their first entry onto the App Store);

Here are some of the areas we would like to see improved:
1) Working with objects in a layered fashion is a bit clumsy; why can't the user send an object to the back of a layer of other objects (after all, they can bring one to the front with a single tap of a partially hidden object)
2) We'd love to see the library of pre-fabricated drawing objects expanded (currently, the application only offers lines and basic geometric shapes)
3) As Corkulous does, this application should allow users to use images from their photo library when creating documents
4) Some of the organization and layout of toolbar items might be reworked to align itself with more natural user workflows (Why can a user print / send a document from the Library screens, but not from within a specific document?)
5) The application's help screens: although we did find some user documentation inside the app, it was definitely not adequate enough to summarize all of the features of the application so that the user could immediately be productive
6) The application might be an "easier" buy for users, if the price were placed more in line with other similar applications ($2.99 - $3.99)

Some things really to like about Bords:
1) The "Radar" functionality from within a document; tap on the hourglass icon on the lower left side of the canvass to get a thumbnail of the ENTIRE document; tap within that thumbnail to instantly jump to a specified location in the document
2) The "live preview" nature of the library screen; Bords offers 3 different modalities for viewing your library's contents, but the middle of the styles is by far the most valuable; It looks and acts like iTunes' cover flow metaphor; We do wish that the system was a little more responsive to the speed of the user's swipe gestures though
3) The manipulation of "stacked" notes; Bords offers a way for users to "stack" notes on top of other notes for a logical association of content; Once a stack is created, the stack can be edited and viewed using a movie-filmstrip metaphor; This was pretty easy to discover, but we did notice some performance issues when working with larger stacks. It is nice that you can edit the visual attributes of specific notes within a stack in the same way that you can a note when it is not in a stack.
4) The ability to draw on the surface of the document; Penultimate set the standard for this type of feature, but Bords does a very good job of re-creating this within the context of the sticky note portion of the application

SUMMARY: The combination of drawing, notes and pre-defined objects, really does make this application live up to the promise of a better "Wipe board" application;

Note: This review was written after the V1.1 release of the application; we did notice that some of the sporadic application crashes (under 1.0) have been cleaned up;
Definitely would recommend this application to those of you looking for a full-featured productivity application that provides basic note taking and drawing support!

Very nicely done

Having designed Groupware and ISM software over many years, I would like to complement is app's designers and development team. The interface has excellent functionality while simultaneously maintaining a clean and intuitive interface. The power of the app does not get in the way of what the User wants to accomplish. Bravo!

Not quite ready . . .

I had high hopes for Bords, but this feels like a beta release to me.

You can certainly "get used" to the clunky, inaccurate and often unpredictable interface. But the truth is that I'm not used to having to get used to iPad apps. I like to be impressed by it's smoothness and ease-of-use. I WANT to be the first of my friends to discover it and introduce them to it. I like to feel like the developers have used every app there is and figured out the BEST way to create a UI experience.

Boards will not impress, but it will take your information down. I'll probably keep using my Pogo with Whiteboard HD and Penultimate for now. I'll check back in after a release or two . . .
